Biography
Dana Winder born in Dublin in 1965 is a self taught painter. She graduated with a degreein History of Art from Trinty College Dublin in 1987. Painting since childhood she began her first major body of work in her twenties while living abroad in Venezuela. There, she was in awe of the wonderful plant life and spent much of her time drawing in the botanical gardens of Caracas and in the Andes. This fascination with plants and the natural landscape remains a strong feature of her work. Since then her main inspiration has been the landscape of the West of Ireland and in particular Kerry where she has lived for many years. Open skies and seascapes are also the subject matter of her work. She enjoys painting the detailed life in rockpools in all their fantastic colours. In contrast some of her canvases focus on the large flat open spaces of beaches at low tide, others on the rich tones of seaweeds washed onshore. While natural life predominates in her work she also paint portraits, interiors and street scenes. She works largely in oils. In terms of technique Dana applies her oil paint thinely and finely, at times achieving an almost watercolour like quality. Her colours vary between strong and vibrant to very delicate and subtle allowing the tones of the canvas through.
